A piece of me is gone

by Amanda

I lost my boyfriend two months ago. We had been together for three years. I was at his house an he was fine. Then later that night he started hurting in his chest an just fell out in the kitchen floor. He was only 32 years old. He died right there. I tried to revive him, but he never came back after that last breath. I felt so helpless. It was so sudden that we didn't even have time to say our goodbyes. I miss him so much and I feel so alone without him. He was my best friend. I will always love him.

I have walked your shoes too...

15 years ago today I lost my boyfriend. Lots has happened since then and most of it good. I married and have 3 children. My husband is wonderful and very respectful and understanding about my feelings for Russell.

However, you never fully recover. The pain you are feeling now never truly goes away but somehow you do eventually learn where to put it so you can get through a day, and then a week, and then a month until it is 15 years later.

I still miss him but now I can smile. I hope for that for you as well.

I hope for you to find the strength you need in the next while as you travel through grief. Never let anyone diminish your feelings or the strength of your relationship simply because you were not married. Don't let anyone else determine your 'timeline for recovery'.

It is hard to find others like ourselves but we are out there. You are not alone.
