Alfie

I was 8 years old, I was bullied at school, I never felt like I fitted in with anyone, I had two older brothers, aged 10 years above me, that were doing their own thing and both parents worked full time. It's safe to say I was lonely.

And then Alfie came along, Alfred Woodside, or as his pedigree name was Kenywood Smooth Operator! He was adorable, a gorgeous porky black labrador puppy that I could not stop cuddling!

We grew up together, he saw me grow up and I him, he made the chores of going to school bareable, the thought of going home to him got me through each day, he gave me the strength to study and carry on with life.

He was always there, he always listened, he always stayed with me when I cried and he never left me, he protected me and my family with the boldest heart, he was my hero.

Sadly, at 24 years of age I had to watch my protector be put to sleep, he had done so well and we clearly gave him such a good life that he never wanted to leave us! He was so strong but one day my mum sat me down and explained to me how much pain she could see him in, and how necessary it was to let him go.

That was and will always be the hardest day of my life, saying goodbye and thanking him for always being there. I kissed him on the head as he fell asleep and I hope he is at the bridge waiting for me.

A few days after he left our world, I was walking through the woods trying to clear my head, wanting, begging to know if we had done the right thing, if he was now pain free and happy. No one was around and I said out loud "please Alfie, give me a sign that you are okay," nothing happened, but as I walked around the corner, a bouncy black labrador came running towards me, he was walking with his owner. Of course this could have been a coincidence but I believe Alfie was saying, "I am okay"

I love you Alfie so much and I still feel you around me, and I am pretty sure you're teaching the new puppy you're old tricks because he is just like you!

Sleep tight Alfie x x x x

I'm so sorry for your loss, no one knows the terrible pain that is in our hearts at the time of a beloved pet's passing, except someone else who has lost their furbaby. Only time seems to help. I hope you continue to remember your Alfie with smiles and happy memories, he shared most of your life with you, and you lost a big part of your life. He will live on in your heart and I know our babies would not want us to be sad. It sounds like he lived a happy long life and he was much loved. I'm sure that was a sign from him, keep watching for more, I do believe they try to comfort us when we are grieving so. RIP beautiful Alfie!

Dear Carla,
by: Pat in Missouri

I am so sad that you lost your beloved Alfie. I have 2 wonderful dogs that are my best friends too. Pets are soooo wonderful because they love us no matter who we are or what we do. I have lost a couple of pets just the way you did. It left a horrible empty space in my life. I know how awful it must be for you. Take heart in the fact that Alfie is no longer in pain and he is probably throwing frisbees at you from Heaven! I send you hugs and kisses.
