BROTHER OF OURS

by Lesley A. Couzens
(Pietermaritzburg, South Africa)

BROTHER OF OURS

To our dear brother
who we love so dearly.
We are battling to live
without you here.

When we were small
we had so much fun.
Playing cricket and rugby
all day long.

Protecting each other from harm,
and from bullies.
Not wanting to allow our
brotherly bond to be broken.

Now that you’re gone,
it’s hard and we are
lost between heaven and earth.
Please come back
so we can be at peace.

Your space between us no longer filled.
Your love for us both is missing,
and our hearts are empty
in the space that you lived.

Our brotherly bond is drifting apart,
‘cause you’re not here to seal it
with love.
You constantly kept the brothers
glued together as one.

Dear brother where are you,
we can’t see you and
we can’t chat as we used to do.

Some days are painful with
happy memories of you,
We keep on trying to pretend
you are here.

But you are not and that
fills our hearts with fear.
The fear that we won’t see
you again,
Please tell us it fine and
we’ll see you soon.

Help us to bond like we used to do.
Help us to care for each other again.
Things aren’t the same
now that you’ve gone.

Dear brother, can you help us,
we need you right now.
Please help us to heal
all the pain that we feel.
