I Hope There's Birthday Cake in Heaven

by Debra Freeman

Happy Birthday, Dad!
I hope there's cake in heaven
And homemade ice cream
And I hope you can eat as much as you want
without the fear of gaining weight
Or suffering from a bellyache
I hope that when everyone sings "Happy Birthday"
They all sing in perfect harmony
And it will be the sweetest song you have ever heard
I hope grandma and grandpa are there
Along with your younger brother
And I hope you receive all that you've ever desired
A strong back, acute hearing, perfect eyesight
I hope the weather is such
That you are able to walk countless bluebird trails
Without breaking a sweat or becoming chilled
And I hope that running alongside you
Are those favorite four-legged furry friends-Jenny, Wimple, and Baron
I hope the skies are blue, the flowers fragrant, and the air is clean
If your thoughts turn to those of us left behind,
I hope your heart is full of joy, not sadness or worry
Trust that we are getting on with our lives
That we are able to pull up memories of you without excessive tears
That we are sharing laughter and warm smiles
Know that your passing proved to be an invaluable form of instruction
Never again will life or love be taken for granted
No longer does material possessions take precedence over family time
Kindness, compassion, and tenderness surpass our need for self-gratification
Yes, pops, it is your day
And although I wish I could share in the celebration
Truly, your first birthday in heaven must be something to behold!
