Kahlua, always looking for a treat

My girl, Kahlua

I rescued Kahlua in 1996 or so, as she was found wandering on the streets of LA, CA. I believe she was a Rottweiler mix, with a mix of Golden Retriever in her. She had such a gentle spirit. Unfortunately, she had to undergo so much medical treatment for chronic ear infections and skin/yeast problems, but she was a tough girl.

I left for a 2 week vacation to the east coast when I received word that Kahlua was not doing so good. She was suffering from kidney failure but I was praying that she wouldn't fall ill so soon and so fast. I was wrong. I took the earliest flight back home in order for me to say good-bye. I have never put a dog to sleep before so needless to say, I was devastated. I still am. I look at her empty bed, trying to decide to either throw it away or allow Bailey, my other dog, to sleep on it. I cannot decide.

Bailey has known Kahlua her whole life. She won't eat and stays by my side. I am so afraid that she will give up, knowing that her pal, Kahlua, has gone to dog heaven.

I pray that time and writing will give me peace and comfort, as it hurts so much right now. Kahlua was always looking for a treat, sticking her head into the pantry when it was open. Now, she can have as many treats as she wants. I love you, Kahlua. You take care of yourself.
