My granny, my best friend

by Nichole

My granny was diagnosed with cancer September 22, 2010. I was the first person she called to tell as she was driving home and while I was at work. After a radical hysterectomy the doctor told us she would need radiation to decrease her chances of cancer coming back. About a year later, she showed symptoms again as well as nodules forming in her lungs. We switched doctors and it was suggested she undergo chemo. The chemo/radiation took its toll on granny and caused her to lose over 100 lbs.she had to have a catheter inserted to help release urine since her kidney function started to deteriorate. On 05/24/2013 while at work, I received a call from her doctor by request of my granny, informing me she was dying and they needed to admit her to hospice care. My granny and I cried and held each other. On 06/19/2013,she succumbed to death. This was the most heart wrenching day of my life. My grandmother raised me since my own mother had me at an early age. She took care of me and made sure I was good in every aspect of life. I was 30 when she passed. I blame myself a lot because I was the person in charge medically. She would ask me why is this happening to her. I didn't know how to comfort her. She was only 66 years old. My heart is broken and if not for my 2 year old son, I would try to escape the pain. I take medicine for depression and anxiety and recently had to quit my job because the environment there exasperated my condition. Praying for better days, months and years.
