My husband died after 11 months of fighting colon cancer

by Lori Davis

Our life fell apart in February of 2010. Dave was not feeling well, sinus infection and unexplained fevers. This man was a workhorse, at home and at work. This was bringing him down. Finally, he came home one day and said that his side hurt a lot. It was his liver. I took him to our primary care physician and he did blood work that showed elevated liver enzymes. I took him to have a ct scan of his liver the next day. They said that he had cancer but they needed to do tests to find out where the cancer was coming from. Well, it was coming from his colon. They said that he had cancer for 3-5 years and it had been in his liver for up to a year. We had been in the process of scheduling a colonoscopy for a few weeks when this all happened. He began a rigorous round of chemo (12 rounds every other week) that he tolerated very well and continued to work. He pushed himself more than he should have. On September 9th, 2010 he fell from the back of his truck onto a concrete floor. He broke 4 ribs and punctured a lung. That was the beginning of the end. He never went back to work. He was in and out of the hospital 4 times after this. Each time he came home, he was weaker. He gave it a valiant try for sure. He made it through the holidays, passed away on January 27, 2011. Our world fell apart. This is not how we planned it at all. My daughter is in college and can't imagine graduation, dance recitals and her wedding without him. My son has lost his best friend that he fished, and snowmobiled with. So much regret! I would find it cathartic to talk to anyone who can relate to our last year! Thanks so much!
