my mother-in-law

by Diane Maresca

My mother-in-law was killed on Jan. 22,2012 by her on vehicle. It was in park and somehow jumped in to reverse and ran her over killing her almost instantly. Her oldest son found her lying on the ground. Her two sons are devastated because they feel like she was stolen from them to soon. They are both still grieving over her being gone. This will be our first Christmas with out her. Her birthday was the day after she got killed. She would of been 64. We all miss her terribly. But the two boys only have each other now. They are trying to go on with life, but still feel robbed that she was taken so soon. I don't know how to help them get through this. Can some one give me advice please. Thanks. We will all miss u mom!!!

Diane I am sorry for your loss of your mother-in-law to a sudden death. How terrible this tragic accident was, that left 2 sons broken and devastated at the loss of their young mother. Same age as me 64yrs. These 2 boys will need a loving supportive family around them. Recovery from loss is a slow ongoing process of grief. You asked for advice. All you can do is be available for them. Listen to them express their grief and sorrow. Offer them practical help by cooking a meal and sharing this with them. Find them outside support if this becomes necessary from speaking with a grief counsellor. Help them find their way back into life eventually catching up with friends and extended family if there is any. A Pastor or a church is also a very comforting support during a loss.
Don't neglect your own need to speak to someone or be supported by others. It is so easy to look out for the needs of others and neglect your own need for comfort and support.
