Our Beloved Thomas

A very sad Good Friday yesterday. Thomas the cat used to sit at the step of our church and was so friendly and let everyone pet him. He was a stray cat and everyone loved him. As the winter of 2002 approached, a lady from our church took him home with her. After a few days, she took him to the shelter. When I found out, I rushed there and asked if I could have him. At first they would not consider it, but I started crying so hard that they relented and I took him home. He immediately crawled up on my lap and did not want to leave. He was almost 11 years old yesterday. About a month ago, he started losing weight. He just wasn't himself. He was diagnosed with heart disease and lymphoma. We had to make the horrible decision to euthanize him yesterday. The lymphoma worked very fast on him. He stopped eating, and was taking 6 kinds of medication daily. He got so tired and could only walk a short distance before lying down to rest, and then would go under the guest bed to rest. He was affectionate, beautiful, and very funny. He brought a lot of love and laughs to me, my husband, and my son. Our son was 10 when we got him, and is almost 20 now. He is an only child, so Tom sort of became a little brother to him. I am worried about how this will affect him. We loved Thomas so much, and now the house seems empty and cold. I can't believe he is gone. Seeing him slip away after the injection just killed us. Never been through that before. I can't ever see having another cat, even though I have loved cats my entire life. Saying goodbye is just too painful.

Thanks, Denise
by: Pam Kelly

Dear Denise, thank you so much for your kind comments. I am so sorry about the loss of your Gazoo. I, too, once had a cat for 17 years, and she died at the vet's office over the Thanksgiving Holiday of 1992 when we were out of town. I thought I'd never get over her death, and now Thomas. I'm not sure which is worse, being out of town, or being right by their sides when they go. But thank you again so much for your encouragement and have a lovely life with Shadow. God Bless You.

What a Lovely Boy..
by: Denise

Thomas was an adorable and cherished little boy. God bless you for providing him a loving home and family. It's so hard when they leave us, it feels like our hearts are being ripped out. Give yourself time. My 17-year old cat Gazoo passed away in Feb/2011 from a stroke and I swore I would never have another. But this past January a starving and freezing three-month old kitten wandered into my backyard, of all places! So now he has a new home, safe and fed and getting into everything.. :)

God will know when the time is right. The unwanted and abandoned cats need someone like you. Please open your heart again after you've had time to grieve and remember Thomas. I took a year, until all the major milestones had passed. Only then did I feel a little better. And in came little Shadow, right on schedule..
