School friend

There was this boy in my school, he had cancer, or something, I never asked, but I knew he was sick. I remember in year 9 we shared a lot of classes together. I wasn't close with him, but I wanted him to feel normal. I spoke to him, sat with him sometimes, and he became my friend. I remember I took a silly photo of myself and he saw it, and he kept on laughing. I eventually got introuble by the teacher but it was worth it, just seeing that kid smile.
Year 10 we weren't in any classes but I'd always said hi to him when we walked past one another, he looked shy whenever I spoke but at the same time he had the most precious smile. Half way through year 10 I noticed him never walking the school grounds, I noticed he was never in the integration room, he was gone.
Half way through year 11, my principle called for a year level assembly, she started off by saying she has bad news, and she mentioned his name, Damien. I'm pretty sure the whole year 11s put the picture together that he passed away. He died a week before my principle told us, he died in the middle of our mid semester exams. My principle told the year 11s the day after the funeral. 1 Day after his funeral.
I would have done anything to say goodbye to him one last time, and I missed the chance.
Rest in peace Damien, thank you for being a beautiful person
