So what the heck is a tear bottle? Tear Bottles have been a tradition since ancient times, and have been found in ancient Roman and Egyptian tombs. Bereaved women cried into vials or cups and buried them with loved ones as a token of honor and respect.Tear Bottles reappeared during the Victorian era, when mourners collected their tears in small bottles ornately decorated with silver and pewter. The tradition was also popular among women waiting for their soldiers to return home from the Civil War. Tear Bottles are about two to four inches in height. Most are made of glass or ceramic, with a tall narrow neck and the body of the bottle is shaped like a tear drop. It is usually stoppered with a rubber seal to preserve the tears; or with a cork to allow for eventual evaporation. Tradition held that bereavement would end when all the tears had evaporated. Today, modern Tear Bottles are given as gifts to commemorate important and emotional occasions like weddings, births, and deaths. They are quickly becoming a popular keepsake, gift item or collectible. Some women choose to use the bottles as originally intended, while others keep them as simple heartfelt reminders of their lost one.
