The Death of a Friend

by Helen Welter
(Indianapolis,IN)

Dear Friend,
You came into my life
brought light into the darkness
joy into the sorrows
that filled the corners of my soul.
We journeyed, you and I,
together through the years
of change and every sort of
hope and longing
for what was yet to come.

But now I’m left to carry on alone
without the sweetness
of your arms around me
or loving words I often heard
that so supported me
when I could not walk alone.

Ever ancient ever new,
your death brings joy for you
but tears that fill my world
until we meet again.

Rest in peace forever more.
