The Greatness of Love

by Nancy St Francis
(Alexandria, VA)

I wrote this poem at the age of 11 after the loss of a beloved feline who for many years had been a wonderful companion and friend. I wanted to know more than anything that I would see her again one day, and wrote a poem which had to have been divinely inspired, since at that age I had yet to develop any writing or poetry skills. I offer this as hope and inspiration to all those who have lost a pet, that you can find comfort in the knowledge that animals go to Heaven just as people do, and that you will see them again one day.

The Greatness of Love

The ghost of a little white kitten
Crying mournfully early and late,
Distracted St. Peter the Watchman
As he guarded the Heavenly gate.

"Say, what do you mean?" said his saintship,
Coming here and behaving like that?"
"I've come to see Nellie my mistress,"
Cried the little wee ghost of a cat.

"I know she's not happy without me,"
"Won't you open and let me come in?"
"Goodness no!" gasped the Heavenly watchman,
"Why, the very idea is a sin!"

"I'm to open the gate just for people,"
"Not for four-legged creatures like you."
"All right," mewed the little white kitten,
"Though a cat I belong in here too."

Amazed at so bold an assertion
But aware he must make no mistake
In silence St. Peter long pondered
For his name and repute were at stake.

Thundering forth came a voice from the distance
Faintly first, then so loud all of Heaven could hear.
"St. Peter, these too I created....
....to cherish and hold very dear!"

Just then a girl angel came flying.
"That's my kitty, St. Peter!" she cried.
And seeing the joy of their meeting
Peter let the cat angel inside.

This tale is the tale of all creatures
Dwelling now with the Blessed above.
They vanquished grim death to reach Heaven,
For such is the Greatness of Love.

Thank you for your beautiful poem, I am in tears right now. I lost my horse, my friend very suddenly 2 days ago. I had him for 14 years and I just can't seem to see past this. Your poem truly seems to be seems to be sent from heaven, and I believe that so much emotion contained in one body has to have a soul. My heart is broken.

What a beautiful poem. It struck a chord with me as I love animals and people. May my Dad be with all the people AND animals that he loved in his lifetime. Thank you again. x

What a great tribute to your cat, that poem brought tears to my eyes.
One day we will see our beloved pets again... that you can be sure of. Keep your chin up, time heals all. They are always with us in memory and spirit!.

Your poem is amazing and heartening. I lost my dear wife a few months ago and the thought of her being with her beloved cat Nicholas brings me great comfort. God is amazing. My wife who suffered so much had her own little girl angel that would come in her dreams. This gives me great hope. Thank you.
