Grief Skills: Coping with Life's Greatest
Challenge

So a loved one has been tragically torn from your side! I am so very sorry
for your loss, and extend my deepest sympathies to you.
Bereavement research has taught us a very important thing... there are no
shortcuts when it comes to grief. The healthiest thing you can do is just
surrender to the grief. Don't try to fight it, deny it or avoid it. Many people
try to escape from the pain of grief... with drugs, alcohol, oversleeping...
even excessive reading or TV watching.
In the earliest stages of grief, it is important that you not "mess with" your
grief, try to control or manipulate it. For, you see, grief is a miraculous
process that provides just what you need, just when you need it. Trust the
grief, and it will sweep you through to a successful conclusion, if you will
just let it. And remember that things will eventually get better.
That being said, you need to know that there are some proven techniques and
coping strategies that can make bereavement easier, more comfortable as you
endure.
